Pawnee Buttes and Lips Bluff: Grover, CO (Copy)

Discover the dramatic beauty of the Pawnee Buttes, two iconic formations rising from the plains of northeastern Colorado. This easy to moderate hike offers stunning panoramic views, abundant wildflowers (seasonally), and opportunities for bird watching. However, careful planning is essential due to seasonal closures and exposure to the elements.

Trail Details:

  • Trail Description: This loop trail winds through the unique landscape surrounding the Pawnee Buttes. The lower portions are primarily dirt and sand, while the upper sections, including the Overlook and Lips Bluff, traverse sandstone bluffs. The highlight is undoubtedly the panoramic view from the Overlook, showcasing the buttes and the vast plains. However, the Lips Bluff Trail connector has significant erosion and steep drop-offs, making it a more challenging and potentially dangerous section.

Important Considerations:

  • Seasonal Closures: Sections of the trail, including Lips Bluff, are closed from March 1st to June 30th to protect nesting raptors (golden eagles, prairie falcons, etc.). Respect these closures.

  • Rattlesnakes: Be aware of the potential presence of rattlesnakes and take appropriate precautions.

  • Lips Bluff Trail: This section has erosion and steep drop-offs. It may not be suitable for all hikers.

  • Private Land: The trail borders private land in some areas. Please stay on the designated trail, respect private property, and remember to close all gates you pass through. Do not climb the buttes as this accelerates erosion and is unsafe.

  • Navigation: While the trail is generally easy to follow, a map or GPS can be helpful due to the remote location.
