Explore the unique rock formations of Vedauwoo on the Turtle Rock Trail, located in Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest between Laramie and Cheyenne, Wyoming. This easy loop offers scenic views, diverse landscapes, and a chance to spot local wildlife. It's a great hike for families, though be prepared for varying conditions depending on the season. A day-use permit is required during peak season (late spring through early fall). Did you know? The nearby town of Buford, Wyoming, once famously claimed the title of "Smallest Town in America," with its population dwindling to just one resident!

Trail Details:

  • Trail Description: The Turtle Rock Trail begins at either the upper or lower parking lot, weaving through an aspen forest alongside a stream. Shortly after starting, you'll pass through a cattle guard gate (please close it behind you!). The trail opens up to reveal several beaver ponds and lodges on one side, and impressive Sherman granite formations on the other. As the trail curves, the landscape transitions from aspen to pine. The northern leg offers views of a meadow and distant rock formations. The southwestern section passes over large granite slabs and through a pine forest before returning to aspen near another creek and small waterfall. Another cattle guard gate is encountered before reaching the upper parking lot. A short connector trail leads back down to the lower parking lot.
