We want our toddlers to experience the joy of outdoor play, to run, jump, and explore the world around them – not spend their days glued to a screen. But, let's be real, getting sunscreen on a wriggling toddler can be a major battle! And with their skin being so much more sensitive than ours, we worry about reactions. Plus, because their skin absorbs substances more readily and their bodies are still developing, it's crucial to choose products free from potentially harmful chemicals. So, how do we protect their delicate skin while still letting them enjoy the sunshine? Let's dive in and demystify sunscreen! We'll explore the importance of Vitamin D, break down the different types of sunscreens and their ingredients, and decode the meaning of SPF and PA+ ratings, giving you the knowledge you need to choose the best protection for your little explorer.
Sunshine and Toddlers: Getting Enough Vitamin D
Alright, mama, let's talk sunshine and about that wiggly little explorer of yours! We all know how much toddlers love being outside, soaking up that warm, golden sunshine. It's not just about the giggles and playtime; the sun does a lot for them, too! First off, it's a major source of vitamin D, the superhero nutrient that helps their little bones grow strong and their immune systems stay healthy. And let's be honest, healthy and happy toddlers means happy parents!
But, you might be asking, 'How can we get the good from the sun without the bad?' That's a great question, and it's exactly what we're going to cover. We'll dive into sunscreen soon, but first, let's understand the importance of sunshine for our little ones.
So, Vitamin D. Why is it so important for toddlers? Well, it's like the building block for their growing bodies. It helps them absorb calcium, which is crucial for strong bones and teeth – especially important during those rapid growth spurts! And it plays a big role in keeping their immune system strong, which is vital for those little ones who love to explore and put everything in their mouths!
Now, here's the fun fact: our toddlers' bodies make vitamin D when sunlight hits their skin, just like ours. But, let's be real, getting enough sun can be tricky, especially with busy schedules or during those cloudy days. More importantly, we know that toddlers have very sensitive skin. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends sun protection for all children, and avoiding prolonged direct sun exposure, especially during peak hours. That's where sun protection and sometimes, vitamin D supplementation, come in.
And what about their hair and skin? A little sunshine can actually be beneficial. It can stimulate hair growth, giving them those adorable baby locks. Plus, some sun exposure can even help with certain skin conditions. But, and this is a big but, too much sun can lead to damage – think sunburn, and dry, irritated skin. So, balance is key!
Now, the big question: how do we get them enough sun without risking a sunburn? The good news is, they absolutely can get enough vitamin D while wearing sunscreen! Even with sunscreen on, some UVB rays sneak through and help their bodies produce vitamin D. And, let's not forget, they also get some vitamin D from their diet.
Pro Tip: Aim for a few minutes of sun exposure without sunscreen during the less intense hours of the day, like early morning or late afternoon. Think 5-10 minutes, depending on their skin type and where you live. Then, for longer periods of sun exposure like nature walks and hikes, slather on that broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and use sun-protective clothing like a wide-brim hat. Remember, the time of year and location play a big role in how much sun they need, too.
Sun is important, vitamin D is essential, and sun protection is non-negotiable for your little explorer. Now, let's dive into the nitty-gritty of sunscreen. Because when it comes to those delicate toddler bodies, we need to know what's safe and effective. Let's break down mineral vs. chemical, decode those confusing labels, and find the perfect sunscreen for your little one!
UVA and UVB: Why Both Matter for Toddler Sun Protection
Image from Shutterstock
UVA Rays: Aging culprits (wrinkles and sun spots and some skin cancers)
UVB Rays: Burn buddies (most skin cancers)
Always choose “Broad Spectrum” sunscreen to protect you from both UVA and UVB rays.
SPF & PA+ Ratings (What They Really Mean)
SPF (Sun Protection Factor):
30 SPF: About 96% UVB protection
50 SPF: About 98% UVB protection
Don't stress too much about the number, just make sure it's between 30 and 50.
Remember: SPF is for UVB only! So it only gauges how protected you are from sunburns and most cancers, not premature aging.
PA+ Rating:
Although not widely used yet, it measures UVA protection. Keep an eye out for it!
PA+ to PA++++: Increasing levels of UVA protection
Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen: Which is Best for Your Toddler?

Mineral Sunscreens (Gentle Protection for Little Ones):
Imagine your toddler's skin wearing a tiny, invisible shield. That's what mineral sunscreen does! It sits on top of their skin, like a gentle barrier, bouncing those harmful sun rays away. This makes it perfect for their delicate, sensitive skin. Plus, it's a great choice for little ones because it's less likely to cause irritation. Look for mineral sunscreens with ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide – they're like superheroes for sun protection!
Bonus: Some mineral sunscreens, like those with ceramides (like CeraVe), help strengthen the skin's natural barrier. A lifesaver for sensitive baby skin!
Chemical Sunscreens (Why You Should Skip It for Your Toddler):
Chemical sunscreens work by soaking into the skin and turning sun rays into heat. While that might sound clever, it can irritate sensitive skin. And toddlers have extra sensitive skin! Because of this, mineral sunscreens are the preferred choice for toddlers. We want to keep their skin happy and healthy, and mineral sunscreens are the gentlest option.
Mineral Sunscreen: Gentle Ingredients for Toddler Skin

For your toddler's delicate skin, mineral sunscreen offers gentle, natural protection. Think of it as a protective shield against the sun's rays. By choosing a mineral sunscreen with these ingredients, you're giving your toddler safe and effective sun protection.
Zinc Oxide & Titanium Dioxide (The Power Duo)
These are the superheroes of mineral sunscreen. Zinc oxide provides excellent broad-spectrum protection, especially against long UVA rays, while titanium dioxide excels at blocking UVB and short UVA rays. Look for sunscreens with a concentration of these ingredients between 10-25% for optimal protection. Some sunscreens may only use zinc oxide, these still provide excellent protection.
Nanoparticles (Tiny But Mighty)
You might see "nanoparticles" on the label, but don't worry! These are simply tiny versions of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They're safe for your toddler's skin, as they don't get absorbed. Plus, they make the sunscreen easier to apply and reduce that white cast mineral sunscreens are known for.
Pro Tip: Lotion or cream formulas are best – avoid powders and aerosols to prevent inhalation. While the FDA considers ingestion or inhalation of zinc oxide safe, titanium dioxide is not.
Chemical Sunscreen Ingredients: What to Avoid for Your Toddler
Listen up, mamas: it’s important to know and understand what’s in your toddler’s sunscreen. And many chemical sunscreen ingredients are more than just a little concerning. In fact, none of the chemical ingredients listed below are considered safe and effective by the FDA, especially at the concentration strengths seen in the formulas sold in the USA.
Avobenzone: Used to protect against UVA rays, it breaks down quickly (offering only 30 minutes of protection unless paired with other ingredients like those listed below), can irritate skin, and can block testosterone (an essential hormone for growing bodies).
Oxybenzone: AKA the coral reef villain! Used to protect against UVA rays, its side effects can lead to lower testosterone in boys. A definite no-go.
Octocrylene: Used to protect against UVB rays, it is an endocrine disruptor, skin irritant, and bad for coral reefs. Plus, it breaks down into toxic free radials in the body, increasing the risk of cancer and other health issues. It can even linger in your body for weeks, traceable in blood and urine. Yikes!
Octisalate, Octinoxate, Homosalate: Octisalate is used to protect against UVB rays and adds water-resistant properties. Octinoxate and Homosalate are both used to protect against UVB rays. And all have potential risks, including skin irritation, hormone disruption, and environmental damage. And like Octocrylene, Octinoxate can be found in urine and blood weeks after use. Gross!
These chemical ingredients can be absorbed through your toddler's skin, and you’ll want to avoid anything that could potentially irritate their sensitive skin or disrupt their developing systems.
Hidden Additives in Sunscreens: Read the Label!

Read those labels, mamas! These sneaky ingredients can cause real big trouble:
Parabens: Used to lengthen the shelf life of the product, they are known endocrine disruptors.
Common parabens include: butylparaben, ethylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben.
Phthalates: Neurotoxic, hormone disruptors, and bad for your organs (liver, kidney, and lungs). Steer clear!
May be listed by name or as “fragrance.” You can also pick them out by the recycling symbol on the bottle (3 or 7).
Sulfates: These pull your skin’s natural oils away from your body, causing irritated and dry skin, which is the last thing we, mamas, need.
One common sulfate used in sunscreen is sodium lauryl sulfate.
Fragrances & Dyes: Irritants disguised as pretty scents and colors (petroleum- or synthetic-based). Go fragrance- and dye- free!
Mineral Oils: Intended to undo the affects of fragrances and dyes, these are also petroleum- and synthetic-based. Not to mention they will clog your pores. Opt for natural oils instead.
Applying Sunscreen to a Wriggly Toddler: Tips and Tricks
The struggle is real! Getting sunscreen on a wiggly, giggly (or unruly - it depends on the time of day!) toddler can feel like an Olympic event. But don't worry, I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve to make it a little easier:
Small Amounts, Big Impact: Instead of squirting a big blob of sunscreen, apply a small amount to your hands, rub them together, and then work in small sections. This helps prevent it from getting everywhere (specifically into their eyes or mouth!).
Makeup Brushes (A Gentle Touch): For those extra sensitive faces, try using soft makeup brushes to apply sunscreen. It's gentle and can even feel like a little tickle, turning sunscreen application into a mini-spa treatment.
Sunscreen Sticks (Targeted Application): Sunscreen sticks are fantastic for quick application to the face, neck, and ears. Then, use your fingers to gently rub in the lotion, ensuring even coverage.
Toddler "Helpers": Let them "help" apply sunscreen to their arms and legs. It might be messy, but it can make the process more fun and engaging. Just make sure you follow up with a more thorough application.
Strategic Positioning: Try applying sunscreen to their face, neck, and ears from behind and above. You can also try having them lie down between your legs (spread or criss-cross), with their face up towards the ceiling. For application to their arms, legs, and feet, having them sit on a chair or closed toilet seat can help stabilize them and keep the squirming (or shifting slowly away from you) to a minimum.
Car Seat & Carrier Magic: Apply sunscreen while they're strapped into their car seat or carrier. This limits their movement and makes it easier to get those hard-to-reach spots.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: Don't be afraid to enlist help! Ask your partner, a mom-friend, or another trusted adult to help you hold or apply sunscreen. Two sets of hands are always better than one.
Screen Time Savior: Sometimes, a little screen time can be a lifesaver! If all else fails, pop on their favorite show while you quickly apply sunscreen.
Consistency is key! Make sunscreen application a regular part of your toddler's routine. With patience, smiles, and eye contact, it will become easier over time, and they'll be more likely to cooperate.
Beyond Sunscreen: Essential Sun-Safe Practices for Toddlers
Sunscreen is a vital part of protecting your toddler, but it's not the only tool in your sun-safety arsenal. Here are some additional ways to keep them safe and comfortable in the sun:
Wide-Brimmed Hats: A wide-brimmed hat with an adjustable (avoid velcro) strap is a must-have. It provides excellent shade for your toddler's face, neck, and ears, and the strap prevents it from flying away in the wind.
Sunglasses with Straps: Protect those precious eyes with sunglasses that have a strap to keep them securely in place (and prevent them from slipping down their little nose). Look for sunglasses that offer UVA and UVB protection.
Sun-Protective Clothing: Dress your toddler in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers their skin. Look for long sleeves and long pants made from tightly woven fabrics (these offer the best Ultraviolet Protection Factor, or UPF) protection. Sun shirts or rash guards work great and dry quick!
Combating Dryness: Post-Sun Care for Toddler Skin

I love mineral sunscreens for their gentle, effective protection, but they can sometimes leave your toddler's skin feeling a little dry. Here's why and what you can do:
The Nature of Mineral Sunscreen:
Mineral sunscreens create a physical barrier to block UV rays. This barrier, while protective, can absorb some of your toddler's natural skin oils, leading to dryness.
Moisturizing Ingredients Matter:
Many mineral sunscreens don't have the added moisturizers that chemical sunscreens often include. This can exacerbate dryness, especially for toddlers with naturally dry skin.
Post-Sun Care Tips: To combat dryness and keep your toddler's skin soft and healthy
Bath Time Cleanse: After a day in the sun, give your toddler a gentle bath to remove the sunscreen. Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser to avoid further irritation.
Gentle Oils: After bath time, apply a gentle, natural oil like jojoba oil to their face, neck, and any other dry areas. Jojoba oil is similar to the skin's natural sebum and is easily absorbed.
Hydrating Balms that Lock in Moisture: Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Organic Magic Balm or Earth Mama’s Organic Nipple Butter are my two go-to products for a thicker protection over irritated skin (we live in a dry climate and my kids are prone to eczema).
Cool Compresses: If either your toddler has any areas of redness or irritation, apply a cool, damp cloth to soothe the skin. You can also apply organic aloe vera (the best source is straight from your houseplant’s leaves)!
By following these simple steps, you can keep your toddler's skin happy and hydrated, even after a day of fun in the sun!
So, keep it simple: mineral sunscreens are the safest choice for new moms and babies. Avoid those harsh chemicals and hidden additives. And don't forget to check those SPF and PA ratings! While it isn’t perfect, my family loves Blue Lizard sunscreen (and their sticks make face application to wiggling toddlers less hazardous - just be sure to rub it in!). It checks all the boxes for us – gentle, effective, and easy to apply. Plus their caps and bottles change color in UV light - how fun?!
Ready to make the switch? Grab a bottle of mineral sunscreen, head outside, and enjoy some sun-safe fun with your little one!
