Escape to the quiet beauty of the Pawnee Buttes in northeastern Colorado. This easy to moderate out-and-back hike offers stunning panoramic views of two iconic formations rising from the plains. It's a great opportunity for bird watching, wildflower viewing (seasonally) and enjoying the peace of the open landscape. Staying hydrated and visiting early in the day are highly recommended.

Trail Details:

  • Trail Description: The Pawnee Buttes Trail invites you to experience the raw beauty of the Colorado plains. This out-and-back trail meanders through the unique terrain surrounding the buttes, offering close-up views of their dramatic formations. The path consists primarily of dirt and sand, and hikers should be prepared for potential muddy sections, especially after rain. You may also encounter areas with washout, requiring careful footing. As you hike, the landscape opens up, revealing expansive views of the surrounding plains and the buttes themselves. The quiet environment allows for a peaceful connection with nature, making it an ideal escape. Keep an eye out for the diverse birdlife that inhabits the area, and during the right season, you might be treated to a display of vibrant wildflowers. Due to the limited shade and tree coverage, it's essential to bring plenty of water and sun and wind protection. Remember to check trail conditions before your visit.
